Therfield First School
“Bringing Learning to Life”
Headteacher Mrs Tara McGovern
We are proud to be based in the village of Therfield and we try to make a positive impact and contribution to the village and its residents (and beyond).
Singing to the Elderly
Groups of children and staff regularly visit the local residential care home to sing and entertain the residents. The children usually make small gifts or take bunches of flowers to brighten up their day.
Each year, at Harvest time, the pupils make special gifts and deliver them to over 150 houses in the local community. Starting in October 2015 with the Flowers of Friendship project, children and staff brought in strong stemmed flowers and foliage alongside flower donations from local businesses. Every child made three hand-ties posies accompanied with personalised tags. These were then delivered to each door by our children. The response we had from the local residents was amazing. The children really enjoyed their special ‘gift of giving’.
In 2016, we completed a similar project – ‘Cakes of Friendship’, where the children made, wrapped and delivered chocolate brownies to the local community.
Carols Around the Christmas Tree
Our children take part in the annual Carols around the Christmas tree event. Pupils, parents and local residents sing a range of carols around the huge Christmas tree erected on the green outside The Fox and Duck village pub. The event is normally extended with homemade mince pies and hot chocolate. Events like these are unique to such small villages. We really are like one extended family.
Local Therapy dog in School
We are ecstatic to be visited weekly by the wonderful Alfie as part of the ‘Read to Dogs’ scheme. Alfie lives in Therfield and enjoys listening to our children read. Our children are very excited when it is their turn to read to Alfie. Before he leaves, Alfie takes a tour around the classrooms to see what all the children have been learning.
Every year we host an open evening, which is open to parents and the whole community. Children sing songs for the busy crowd and visitors get an insight into life at Therfield School. The classrooms are open offering a range of exciting challenges and our wonderful cook makes tasty samples of the most popular meals that our children regularly enjoy eating
Fundraising for charitable causes
We take part in a range of charity themed days/events to fundraise for local and national causes. Events have included non-uniform/dress-up days for Comic Relief, Red Nose Day and Jeans for Genes Day. We also take part in sponsored events, cake sales, singing as a whole school inside Tesco Extra in Royston and collect donations during our nativity performance. For Harvest we host an annual whole school breakfast where staff donate the food items and breakfast donations are made to a chosen charity. More recently we have sponsored a child, aged seven, from South Africa. We will continue with annual fundraising to sustain our sponsorship.
Children are very proud knowing that they have made a difference to the lives of others.
